Specialty Transports

The Problem

Midwest Mobile Technologies is a company dedicated to the design and production of large mobile units used in a wide range of industries from telecommunications and health care to military specialty transports. While designing a unit for the United States Navy, they realized that they needed a material to line the interior of some external compartments designed for the storing of cables and equipment. The material needed to be able to withstand temperatures of 150 to 175 degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally, the material needed to be durable enough to take the impact and abrasion of the gear being constantly loaded and unloaded while at the same time offering surface protection and preventing the equipment from being marred or damaged during transport.

The Solution

The product they chose to meet this challenge was Crown Plastics .75mm black UHMW with a 2 mil acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive. The pressure sensitive adhesive made installation simple. After the substrate was properly cleaned, they simply peeled back the release liner and stuck the material in place. Avery Dennison's 1122 2 mil acrylic was able to satisfy their temperature requirements with an operating temperature of 121 to 177 degrees Celsius.

The black UHMW was able to offer the surface and damage protection they were looking for. The guage of the UHMW was ideal for installation due to the fact that the material was very pliable and could easily be cut with a razor knife. The .75mm material can also be easily die cut to conform to a tight radius or configuration. The material also offered UV stability and corrosion resistance to weather and salt spray.
