| A Simple Demo To Show the Benefits of UHMW Tape |
Requirements:
- Mechanically fasten a 1/4” thick piece of UHMW to a metal substrate.
- UHMW adhesive backed chip.
- Rigid substrate 6” x 6” (.020” sheet metal or piece of acrylic will do)
1. Show the customer the 1/4” mechanically fastened piece of UHMW and
explain these issues with the customer (issues they probably did not
realize).
A) Mechanical fastening requires you to allow for 3/16” for countersink
Only 1/16 useable wear surface - 75% scrap Remaining 3/16” serves no
other purpose than to hold bolts.
B) Fastener cost - With metal prices skyrocketing, this cannot be ignored.
C) Since material is held in isolated points to the substrate, the
remaining material is free to move and warp due to thermal expansion.
D) In a food processing application, the USDA has problems with bolt
heads, seams and the opportunity for contamination to get behind
mechanically fastened material.
E) Getting product out of sheet requires extra fabrication on the part of the distributor or end user adding cost.
2. Show the customer the 1/16” adhesive backed chip and note the following:
A) Same amount of useable wear surface as the 1/4” sheet - less scrap factor.
B) No mechanical fastening - reduces labor and no fastener cost.
C) Adhesive hold entire surface to substrate preventing thermal expansion from warping the material.
D) Material provided in continuous roll eliminating seams, bolt heads
and preventing contamination from getting behind the product in food
processing applications.
E) Material is supplied slit to order eliminating the need for additional fabrication.
3. Peel off the release liner from the the UHMW chip and apply to the
rigid substrate. Be sure to apply plenty of pressure with your thumb
and be sure to work the edges as this is a "pressure sensitive"
adhesive.
4. Ask the customer to try and remove the chip from the substrate. They
will lose a couple of fingernails in the process. They will see the
effectiveness of the adhesive and how easy it was to install.
Remember:
Customers typically will order the sheet materials because they have
never been shown an option. We do not imply we can replace every 1/4"
application with tape, but in many instances, the sheet materials are
overkill and the tapes are a simple, cost effective solution to many of
the wear, surface protection, noise reduction and release problems out
in the market today. Please contact us if you have any questions
regardingan application or questions regarding adhesive selection.
