I will heading out to warm and sunny Los Angeles the week of April 16 to begin working with our new West coast sales rep, Dennis Sweeney of The Leading Edge. Dennis and his wife, Irene, have been in the plastics industry a long time and we are thrilled to have them on board with us covering the western side of the US. We will spend Monday visiting a number of distributors in LA then plan to take a quick shot down to Phoenix to visit several distribution centers in the region. We come back to LA and eventually head north to Fresno before making a dash back to LA on Friday so I can make it back home. We will be covering a lot of territory but there is a lot of opportunity we have to uncover. It has been awhile since we made it out west so we are looking forward to seeing a few old faces and catching up with the markets out there. Several new market opportunities have presented themselves and over the next month or two we will begin exploring them. As we make progress in these areas, we will keep you posted. Some of these may be pretty significant. We hope everyone had a great Easter weekend with family and that the weather where you are was as nice as it was here. In 2008 and 2009, Crown Plastics felt the pain of the economic downturn like everyone else. We had two options. Curl up in to the fetal position and hope for survival or invest in new equipment, expand our capabilities and look at growing into markets that we identified as opportunities. Since then, our business has exploded and we have more opportunity in front of us now than ever before.

One of the areas of focus is to utilize our unique manufacturing capability to come up with new products and solve problems in the marketplace that businesses have struggled with for years. We are prepared to launch Crown Plastics CEA, cushioning and energy absorbing products. These are Santoprene and EPDM products that we have been able to offer in a BONDABLE form. No company has ever been able to reliably produce a bondable EPDM or Santoprene material until now. This is gaining a lot of attention with our automotive suppliers and we know there will great opportunities in appliance and converting markets.

We will be offering these materials in metric gauges of 1mm, 1.5mm, 2mm and 3mm and with our unique treatment process, we can apply ANY adhesive system to EPDM and Santoprene and make it work.  We feel there are tremendous opportunities for these products which can help alleviate the need for solvent based primers and high cost adhesives which only produce marginal results. We will be heading down to Atlanta the week of Feb. 6 to exhibit at the MODEX material handling show. This will be another opportunity for us to educate the masses on the value proposition of the DuraSurf product line and the many problems that can be solved covering a wide range of applications. We have seen a big increase in the market awareness of the DuraSurf STS over the last year and now we have case studies and testimonials to back up our claims. We continue to have huge opportunities present themselves and now it is a matter of how do we handle all of the incoming requests and qualify the applications? Fortunately, our recent addition of sales reps has taken up some of the load and have been able to provide us very valuable information.

We also just finished recording five new segments of the “Make It Stick” video series which should start making their way into newsletters within the next month or so. This series features a variety of application tips and information to help ensure the best success in solving your customers problems. If there is a particular topic you would like to see featured, please let us know. We would love to have your input and hear about some of the applications you are working on. I will begin blogging more on subjects such as surface preparation and proper adhesive selection. This topics are critical to the success of any bonding application and these topics need to be constantly reviewed. Stay Tuned!

Boy, it seems as if 2011 just started and before you know it we are into the next year. We saw a lot of activity in some new markets in 2011 and we plan to keep turning over stones in 2012. In addition to the Material Handling market, which has great momentum carrying over this year, we will get more info on our airboat bottom which is currently in test. Final word should be coming in sometime in May. If all goes as planned, that could be another market that we can see significant growth. Additional opportunities in composites and transportation are also pointing us to another record year. We will be spending more time in Mexico developing opportunities there and look to set up two or three master distributors in South America. We have inquiries in India and Europe and plan to begin developing the industrial markets in China and the Pacific Rim. We are currently expanding our billet molding capability and are expanding our current width capability on thicker gauges as well. We have a lot of work to do but the opportunities keep pouring in. We have recently added sales reps in 4 regions of the US and plan to bring on a rep for the west coast this year. And believe it or not, we have done this without a penny of government stimulus money. Go figure. There are a lot of great things happening to kick off 2012. We look forward to all of the challenges and we hope that we can help solve some of your challenges as well.
