We will be heading down to Atlanta the week of Feb. 6 to exhibit at the MODEX material handling show. This will be another opportunity for us to educate the masses on the value proposition of the DuraSurf product line and the many problems that can be solved covering a wide range of applications. We have seen a big increase in the market awareness of the DuraSurf STS over the last year and now we have case studies and testimonials to back up our claims. We continue to have huge opportunities present themselves and now it is a matter of how do we handle all of the incoming requests and qualify the applications? Fortunately, our recent addition of sales reps has taken up some of the load and have been able to provide us very valuable information.

We also just finished recording five new segments of the “Make It Stick” video series which should start making their way into newsletters within the next month or so. This series features a variety of application tips and information to help ensure the best success in solving your customers problems. If there is a particular topic you would like to see featured, please let us know. We would love to have your input and hear about some of the applications you are working on. I will begin blogging more on subjects such as surface preparation and proper adhesive selection. This topics are critical to the success of any bonding application and these topics need to be constantly reviewed. Stay Tuned!

Boy, it seems as if 2011 just started and before you know it we are into the next year. We saw a lot of activity in some new markets in 2011 and we plan to keep turning over stones in 2012. In addition to the Material Handling market, which has great momentum carrying over this year, we will get more info on our airboat bottom which is currently in test. Final word should be coming in sometime in May. If all goes as planned, that could be another market that we can see significant growth. Additional opportunities in composites and transportation are also pointing us to another record year. We will be spending more time in Mexico developing opportunities there and look to set up two or three master distributors in South America. We have inquiries in India and Europe and plan to begin developing the industrial markets in China and the Pacific Rim. We are currently expanding our billet molding capability and are expanding our current width capability on thicker gauges as well. We have a lot of work to do but the opportunities keep pouring in. We have recently added sales reps in 4 regions of the US and plan to bring on a rep for the west coast this year. And believe it or not, we have done this without a penny of government stimulus money. Go figure. There are a lot of great things happening to kick off 2012. We look forward to all of the challenges and we hope that we can help solve some of your challenges as well.

It’s hard to believe that 2 years ago we, along with many other companies, were doing everything we could to reduce costs and survive the storm. During this period, however, we also spent a lot of time planting seeds – looking at new markets, developing new products, investigating new opportunities. It has really paid off! We set a record year in sales by the beginning of December and have some pretty aggressive goals set out for the next several years. We also have more opportunity in front of us than I can remember. The DuraSurf STS has exploded, solving numerous problems at distribution centers and package handing facilities. We are beginning to work with extrudable grade materials and identifying where there are needs for customized products that no one has been able to fill. The list goes on and on. It is an exciting time here as we look to expand our horizons and diversify our product offerings. Please feel free to contact us if there is a particular product you are looking for or if there is a problem you are having difficulty in solving. We would love to look at the biggest challenge you have right now. Stay warm – the cold weather is coming.

This issue of The Crown Advantage takes a few twists and turns as we explore a couple of unique applications for Crown Plastics’ DuraSurf™.

First, Director of Field Support, Pete Ellerhorst, coaches us through the process for making adhesive-backed DuraSurf stick to a curved surface –– a concrete truck (pouring) chute. Second, we take a look at the advantages of DuraSurf over sheet plastics in the design of drift boats, airboats and other shallow water craft.

DuraSurf “Make it Stick”

Believe it!

Usually we tell our customers that adhesive-backed DuraSurf works best when it’s applied to a clean, smooth, flat dry surface. And that’s true! But did you know that adhesive-backed DuraSurf also conforms to curves surfaces? Pete Ellerhorst shows us how to “Make It Stick” to a concrete truck chute liner in today’s video. Click on the “Make It Stick” logo below to find out!

Product Feature

Drift Boat R-evolution

As far back as at least the 1930′s river enthusiasts navigated North America’s shallow, fast-moving waters via the wooden dory, a wide, flat-bottomed, oar-driven boat with a rounded, rocker profile.

The dory is still around but designs have changed. New materials –– aluminum and fiberglass –– mean lighter construction and more flexibility of use. The dory is going into places it never went before. And as the dory has evolved, so has the name. Now we call them drift boats …Click Here To Read More!

I just spent a couple of days with our new transportation specialist, Chris McClintock, in Detroit introducing him to some of our automotive accounts. As we sat with our customers, we were introduced to a number of opportunities to create new innovative products to address challenges in the market that are currently going unaddressed. This is what we love. To me, it is what we do best. Show me your biggest problem, and let me find an answer. We can utilize our unique continuous compression molding process to develop high temperature composites or consolidation of various films and blends. Combined with our extrusion capability, this gives us an endless array of combinations we can develop to solve numerous problems in the field. On this trip alone, we were presented with no less than three great opportunities. We encourage you to contact us if you have a product development idea or know of a need in a particular industry or market. For Crown Plastics, this is music to our ears

We will be heading to Baltimore Sept. 12 for the International Association of Plastics Distributors convention which will run form Tuesday Sept. 13 through Thursday Sept. 15. This show gives us a chance to visit with a lot of our distributors from around the country and provide information on new application and markets we are pursuing. There will be a table top expo which is open to everyone which runs from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM. If you are in the area, come on out and check it out. For information, go to http://www.iapd.org. I will be joined in the booth by our newest customer service representative, Kellee Case. This will be the first time she will have the opportunity to meet with many of our customers face to face and I know she is looking forward to meeting many of you. We are having our best year ever and we wanted to thank everyone for their support of Crown Plastics. We know there are still many opportunities out there so let’s keep pressing forward and helping customers solve their problems.
