Packaging and Skidding Equipment – Cuber Plates

The Problem

Many industries such as aggregate or concrete manufacturing use skidding equipment (cubers) to help in handling heavy products.

The problem involves moving concrete blocks onto a skid.

The process:

• the block comes down the conveyor
• the block is mechanically pushed onto a hardened steel plate
• the plate is hydraulically raised and slides forward over the skid
• the block is held from sliding back and the plate slides back into position and the block drops onto the skid

This is a lot of sliding abrasion and it can be costly. Every three years, the company had to replace the steel plate at a cost of $1000.

The Solution

In roughly 30 minutes, a 1.3mm sheet of UHMW was bonded to the steel plate. It not only reduced wear, it provided some noise abatement as well.
