UHMW vs. Teflon Over
the years, many engineers have been spec-ing in PTFE (Teflon) for many
applications requiring high abrasion resistance and impact strength only
to be disappointed.
![]() UHMW has a coefficient of friction that rivals Teflon but will outperform PTFE in abrasion resistance by a ratio of 30 to 1. In addition, UHMW is only about 1/3 the cost of Teflon thereby giving UHMW the nickname the poor mans Teflon. |
![]() So for applications under 180 F that need wear reduction and good coefficient of friction, the informed choice should be UHMW. UHMW is Bondable Crown Plastics has dispelled the common notion that polyethylene is not bondable. By offering a wide range of UHMW polyethylene products in a tape form, Crown Plastics has opened up an entirely new market and new mindset for UHMW. By providing UHMW with an adhesive backing, the need for mechanical fastening is eliminated thereby reducing downtime and cost. Since a 1/4 UHMW sheet only provides a 1/16 usable wear surface after countersinking, 75% of the sheet material is basically scrap. Fastener cost and labor involved in the installation of sheet stock also cannot be ignored. The easy solution is to apply a 1/16 UHMW adhesive backed strip. The coils can come in standard lengths up to 200 feet eliminating seams and catch points. By properly cleaning the surface and applying pressure to the material after installation, bondable UHMW is now a viable alternative to the traditional UHMW methods.
