Woodworking A major power tool manufacturer now uses UHMW pressure-sensitive wearstrips in a table saw fence head mechanism. The fence head guides the wood as it runs through the saw blade. The fence head is adjustable and uses a clamping system to lock the fence in place once the dimension has been set. The Problem Needed on the bottom of the locking mechanism: a material that can slide easily on a guide bar as if it were on ball bearings. The material also needs to be tough - wood particles and hardened sap can create both abrasion and sticking problems.

The Solution It was decided that a .89mm UHMW black die cut strip would be used, custom laminated with two 19mm adhesive strips on each edge. This ensured not only a precise fit but a tight seal as well. The laminated strips, bonded to areas of machined cast aluminum, sealed the edges while being mechanically fastened in the center. 
The black UHMW was able to offer the surface and damage protection they were looking for. The guage of the UHMW was ideal for installation due to the fact that the material was very pliable and could easily be cut with a razor knife. The .75mm material can also be easily die cut to conform to a tight radius or configuration. The material also offered UV stability and corrosion resistance to weather and salt spray. |
